Air France Jet Crash Off Maiquetia Blamed on Mechanical Failure
Investigators in Caracas attributed the Air France Boeing 707 crash near Maiquetia to mechanical failure, not hijacking or sabotage. Flight 212 from Santiago to Paris carried 62 aboard, 41 passengers and 21 crew, with 10 bodies recovered and searches hampered by currents and sharks. The disaster followed a prior jetliner crash near the airport last year. Shrewd observations from Captains Cabezas and Aranguren described the explosion as a ball of fire as the plane hit the water.
