McGovern signals conditional troop pullout plans
Democratic presidential candidate George McGovern said he would consider accelerating the withdrawal of U S troops from Thailand if it aids the release of U S prisoners of war and would push for a 90 day withdrawal from Indochina. He suggested keeping some forces in Thailand may occur until prisoners are freed and criticized isolationist labels. He also argued for deep cuts in Europe and a direct negotiation approach with Israel, while predicting a Nixon lead is not decisive and planning a Labor Day campaign detour in Detroit.
