Unofficial returns from the School Plant Facilities Levy election Tuesday show preliminary results with local officials tallying votes. Citizens and school supporters await final certification as figures are compiled.
Kootenai County Sheriff Stan Johnson reports 52 inmates in custody far above the jail’s capacity. About 32 were seized in recent drug raids. 23 arrested Sunday night and 11 more since. Bond amounts ranged from 2,500 to 25,000. The sheriff seeks court and regional cooperation to move some prisoners to other jails.
Chief Deputy Attorney General Clarence Suiter said the office will act to protect the states interests in $5.2 million Tort Claims Act claims filed by survivors of 47 of 91 men who died May 2 in a Kellogg area mine. Survivors allege inspector negligence. Suiter noted the office has not yet examined the full claims.

Agriculture Commissioner Oscar Arstein said Tuesday no one is “really taking care” of Idaho’s five licensed rendering plants. He noted the plants, once under the state department, have since been freed from oversight two years ago and have been floundering amid strict regulations and funding shortages.
President Charles Schoon announces Bonner County Cooperators Federal Credit Union has moved to 215 North Fifth. August 30 marks Leona Irish’s first day open for business in the former Dutch’s Barber Shop. The credit union serves over 600 members with assets totaling $336000.
