Clergy ban on public office in Tennessee challenged
A Baptist minister, Rev. Paul McDaniel, challenges a 1796 Tennessee provision barring ministers from public office. An amicus brief by major religious and civil liberty groups argues the ban violates the First Amendment free exercise clause, urging the Supreme Court to strike it down while McDaniel sits at the state constitutional convention.
