Bonner County Chooses Site for New Sandpoint Landfill

Bonner County Commissioners report locating a 87 acre landfill site about 1 mile south of Sandpoint and 15 miles from Priest River. Negotiations continue with the landowner who asks 30000 annually, with the county possibly paying 10000 if it operates the facility. A three month trial would start Oct 1, with contract renegotiation after. Health officials will oversee compliance with federal and state standards and the Planning Commission will review Sept 14.

Drunk-Driver Prosecution Backlog Program Questioned

A spokesman for the Alcohol Safety Action Project says there is nothing illegal about financial aid to expedite prosecutions of drunken drivers. Gooding County prosecutor Andrew F. James thinks the program may be illegal as it would pay prosecutors 250 per case to clear records. Lowry explains funds go to cities and counties with backlog cases.

Ten Fatalities In 71 Season

ROISE UP I reports 42 gun hunting accidents in 1971 with 10 fatalities. Idaho Fish and Game notes most incidents within 10 yards and 38 victims were Idaho residents. It urges blaze orange clothing to avoid misidentification while tracking game.

Idaho Awarded Federal Funds Under Airport Program

Washington reports Idaho received 1 057 429 for air carrier and reliever airport development and 288 147 for general aviation airports under the Airport and Airway Development Act of 1970. The total award is 1 345 876 with portions designated to Idaho airports by passenger usage ratios.

Pack River Mills End Walkout As Operations Resume

Work resumed Monday at Pack River Lumber and Idaho Forest Industries after a union walkout by International Woodworkers Local 310 affected about 200 workers. Atlas Division of IFI signed a new contract ending the strike at Coeur d'Alene, while Dover and Colburn mills reported full force with boilers fired Sunday evening.
