Hydroplane Races Set for Sandpoint Weekend

Ron May of the Lions Club, co chairman, announced final preparations for a two day hydroplane event at Sandpoint Beach. Buoys mark the course and a starting barge will dock tonight. Fred Kennedy's company provides a crane for the pit area used in 1968. Corky Matthews of the Inboard Racing Association will attend with regulations. Forty seven boats have registered with six classes represented. Time trials begin 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday with races from 12:30 p.m. to dark each day.

Hogan urges careful planning for 1976 Denver Winter Games

Colorado Lt. Gov. Mark Hogan says the 1976 Winter Olympics could benefit the state but warns extreme caution is needed to protect the environment. He stresses building facilities to minimize damage and ensure recreation access, expanding transit to reduce auto use, and strict land zoning to curb motels and eateries between Denver and mountain sites.

Weather Outlook for Northern Idaho and Nearby Mountains

Mostly fair today with a chance of showers in the nearby mountains tonight and Saturday. Highs around 85 today, 80 Saturday, lows 55 tonight. Extended outlook shows mostly fair skies with highs in the 80s to 90s and lows 45 to 55.

Canoga Park Babysitter Charged After Two Children Die

Police report a babysitter left two young children in a car while she chatted inside. Temperatures in the Canoga Park area reached about 105 degrees, with the car interior likely around 120 degrees. Both children were pronounced dead at Northridge Hospital.

Post Office to become independent postal service

The House completed action on a historic bill to transform the post office into an independent postal service. President Nixon is expected to sign the bill next week, with first class rates rising from six to eight cents and other classes up about a third. Postmaster General Blount will lose cabinet status but promises better service, and the reform includes 8 percent pay raises and collective bargaining rights for 750,000 workers.

Priest Lake man accused of diverting Granite Creek

Clarence Johnson of Priest Lake is accused of diverting Granite Creek north of Grandview Addition on the west side of Priest Lake to create waterfront lots. Public Lands official stop work and ordered the stream returned to its original flow pending a Boise study using aerial photos.
