Petitions Open for Three Sandpoint City Council Seats

Filing petitions for three Sandpoint City Council posts in November is open. Candidates need signatures from 40 qualified electors and must be city residents aged at least 18. Filing runs Sept 25 to Oct 4. Current holders are Bob Kalb Edna Spearman and George Harper. Election terms are four years. Voters must re register if address changed or did not vote last election.

Stranger Warning Issued By Police

Sandpoint police warn residents to be cautious about strangers entering homes. Detective Chuck Bastian urged calling authorities to verify identities. Police also reported clearing burglary at Rainier Beer warehouse on Railroad Avenue the night of June 29 with at least seven cases stolen and a 17 year old detained in Spokane.

Three Get Sentences In First District Court

Three men received probation or light prison terms in a First District Court on Monday. Harold Stolz of Priest River got one year probation and $150 reimbursement for attorney fees after a guilty plea to receiving stolen property. Guy Mulanax of Samuels drew three years probation and weekend jail time until October 26 after pleading guilty to first degree burglary linked to a Farmin School break in with over $1,200 in meat and equipment taken. Duane Finney of Colburn got one year probation and a $150 fine for marijuana possession with sentence withheld.

One Lightning Spot Fire Reported in Large Western Region

The Forest Service reported one lightning caused fire today in a region covering eastern Washington northern Idaho northeastern Oregon and Montana. The fire near Grangeville Idaho in Nez Perce National Forest was under an acre and fire danger remains high at about level three on a five point scale due to rising heat later in the season.

Defendants Out On Bond After Bail Lowered in Drug Bust

Judge Ralph Mills lowered bail for Jon Mason Trudy Jo Mason and Bruce Cushman in a county marijuana case described by Sheriff Robert Wilcox as the largest drug bust in county history. Jon Mason and Cushman posted 1000 each while Trudy Jo Mason posted 250.

A notice states that the city Planning and Zoning meeting is canceled for Thursday.

Pioneer Power Plant Would Meet Standards

An environmental scientist testified that the Pioneer generating plant using low sulfur coal would meet air quality standards without scrubbers and have limited ecological impact. He estimated scrubbers would add over 80 million dollars in cost and raise household costs by about 100 dollars annually.
