A Baker Oregon accident Tuesday afternoon killed former Sandpoint resident Joseph Popplewell 29 as the rear wheel of his pickup came loose and the vehicle overturned. One passenger remains in critical condition. Popplewell home was in Troy Montana. he leaves a wife two daughters and his parents plus two brothers. Kootenai Man Dies In Woods Mishap

A 22 year old Kootenai man died Tuesday morning after a logging accident north of Clark Fork. Larry Van Rossum was struck by a falling snag while hooking on the decking area for the Forest Service at Wellington Creek up Big Lightening. He was brought down by Gil Gibbs and pronounced dead on arrival at Sandpoint Ambulance. He had years of logging experience and studied at UIJC and the University of Idaho. He worked for Stevens Logging and Gibbs Logging of Dover since Monday.

Authorities recovered the body of 17 year old Paul Brown of Lake Side California from the Snake River about one mile below Oxbow Dam. He was swept away while swimming last Thursday.

Pelton Accepts Appointment to Fair Board

Dale Pelton announced he accepted Bonner County Commissioners appointment to the Fair Board filling the vacancy caused by Ivan Smith's resignation. Pelton, a former Orfino, Idaho resident, has lived in Sandpoint six and a half years and is active in civic affairs as president of the Sandpoint Lions Club and plant manager for Joslyn Manufacturing.

Competitive Trail Ride Set Saturday in Idaho

The Idaho Panhandle Competitive Trail Ride is scheduled for Saturday August 7 starting at the Jim Wood ranch on Gold Creek. Riders travel 40 miles over trails with seven hour finish, vet checks by Dr Stan Schwartz, and three class trophies awarded for Heavyweight Lightweight and Junior.
