Ponderosa Pine Seed Loss To Animals Highlighted
A Forest Service study from Missoula shows only about 6 percent of ponderosa cone seeds survive a two year development. Most seed loss occurs to abortion and foraging squirrels and insects, with about 90 percent eaten or cached by small animals after seeds shed in autumn. Deer mice chipmunks and birds drive most losses and seed crops influence rodent populations.
