Doctors Press Local Malpractice Resolution Amid Insurance Crisis

Two Sandpoint physicians plan to bring a local malpractice resolution to the Idaho Medical Association meeting despite officials saying local resolutions will not be discussed. Dr. Ed Draper and Dr. Fred Marienau urge action and a call for an emergency legislative session as Argonaut Insurance cancels coverage by June 1 and premiums triple. Draper warns doctors may quit practice if no change occurs. SB1186 and SB1229 are deemed insufficient.

Treasury Asks Gun Controls Tightened Licensing

The Treasury Department urged stricter licensing for firearm sales and a ban on manufacturing small handguns. David R. Macdonald testified before the Senate subcommittee that current laws have critical deficiencies and proposed higher license fees, tighter standards, and banning Saturday Night Specials. He urged a mandatory one year sentence for first offenders convicted of unlawfully carrying or using a firearm in federal crimes.

Suspect Jailed For Burglary In North Boyer Cabin Theft

An 18-year-old Sandpoint man was charged with second degree burglary for the April 9 theft of a crossbow from a North Boyer cabin. Sheriff Robert Wilcox said the same crossbow was taken in a prior breakin within four months and recovered. Probert is held on 1000 bond. a juvenile suspect is also charged.

Kennedy Development wins Sand Creek dredging bid

Kennedy Development and Contracting Co won the Sand Creek mouth dredging 13 420 dollar bid after Fix It Fits was disqualified for a lump sum requirement. Work may start next fall with delay due to fishing season and county meetings. Silt buildup blamed on upstream subdivision and highway work has hindered boat access.

Chamber Rebuffs Idaho Association of Commerce and Industry

Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce directors vote unanimously to decline joining the Idaho Association of Commerce and Industry. President Bill Watkins cites financial and other reasons and notes the community is highly environmental. The IACI targets chambers statewide, opposing a National Recreation Area for 103 miles of the Middle Snake River.

Bonner County Planning Commission Sets Tonight Meeting Agenda

The Bonner County Planning and Zoning Commission will meet at 7:30 p.m. in the courthouse to discuss a subdivision procedure amendment and a recommendation to the Board of County Commissioners to reject final plat approval until payment is received for a lot sale violation under Idaho Code 50-1316. The agenda also includes amendment of the conditional use permit process and a proposed legal transaction to obtain 1700 from a developer. Tom Low seeks a conditional use permit to add three spaces to his mobile home park near Nordman, and a preliminary concept review for an unnamed plat southwest of Cocolalla Lake.
