Petition circulators call for the removal of Dr. Wayne Likens, alleging the board should appoint, with organizers from the Kootenai area staying anonymous. supporters say discontent over district business helped defeat a $4.5 million bond.
Likens was contacted today and did not comment, saying no statement would be issued and action on the petition would be up to the board. Marian Ebbett, school board chair, said she knew nothing about the petition and noted no prior dismissal petitions in her five years on the board. Likens has led District 82 for five years and previously held a supervisory role in a St Louis district.
Idaho deputy secretary of state says only three days remain to file petition signatures for presidential candidates on May 25 ballot. One filer, Rachel Koch of Milwaukie Oregon, seeks Republican ballot inclusion with Ford and Reagan to gain Nebraska primary eligibility. Maurice Smith of Hagerman showed interest but Rainbow Party not certified in Idaho. Deadline Monday. uncertainty remains about additional candidates.
Police report a second purse snatching in Sandpoint targeting elderly women. Vivian Anthous, 63, was injured with a fractured hip and shoulder when a tall man in dark blue clothes grabbed her purse near Jennestads, as she walked home from the Pastime Cafe. A prior incident involved a 72-year-old woman near Sandpoint Bowling Lanes. Authorities seek leads and say suspects may be marked as easy prey. The second suspect could face robbery charges.
Washington reports the annual clock adjustment to daylight saving time occurs Sunday at 2:00 am local time. Clocks go forward one hour at bedtime Saturday, extending evening daylight through October. Senate-passed bill would extend daylight time to eight months but faces House opposition and would not start until next year.
Bonner County Planning and Zoning Commission denied a conditional use permit for a drive in restaurant five miles south of Sandpoint off U.S. 95 after conflicts over a 150 foot setback. The panel recommended approval for a marine sales building at Garfield Bay and a motorcycle race track on Jim Woods property amid mixed landowner opposition and noise concerns.
Dave Welch demonstrated a high tech distance measuring instrument similar to a surveyor transit. The device uses an infrared beam and built in computer to calculate distance and can map large water bodies, river bottoms, and harbor profiles.
