Laird Sets Out Open Policy On Air Strikes In Vietnam
Defense Secretary Melvin Laird told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that U S air and naval power will be used as needed to stop the North Vietnamese offensive and protect troops in South Vietnam. He said raids continue in North Vietnam and downplayed reports of a bombing halt while stressing continued naval buildup as essential. He also noted commanders have authority to order attacks in and above the DMZ and that North Vietnam violated the 1968 DMZ agreement. No ground reinforcements are planned.
