Schweitzer Closes On Best Day Of Year

Area manager Sam Wormington hailed the season as the most beautiful of the year as Schweitzer Basin ended the longest ski season in history. The resort opened November 16, 1973 and closed April 14, with one week lost to January floods. Expo opens May 4 in Spokane featuring a Schweitzer exhibit, the first ski area at a world fair.

Nixon granted 60 day extension on tax payment

President Nixon received a 60 day reprieve from the IRS for back taxes and interest totaling about $467000 for 1969 to 1972 returns. The White House said the extension covers the near deadline and Nixon has 30 days to arrange a payment plan. The ruling touched California taxes and a New York investigation while New York residency is noted.

Train Derails West Of Here Near Sandpoint Idaho

Spokane officials say a derailment Saturday night 16 miles west of Sandpoint halted a 96 car northbound freight. Ten cars left the tracks and a 400 foot section was torn out. Crews built a temporary track and expect several days before mainline repair and traffic return.

Dry Kiln Lost In Mill Blaze At Arrow Tie Mills

Fire at Arrow Tie Mills destroyed the dry kiln and its contents early Saturday. Mill manager Larry Donnerberg said Northside Fire Assoc responded at 7 50 a m and prevented spread to nearby buildings. No insurance covers the loss and reconstruction should take about six weeks.

Idaho's Expo Exhibit Told

The Idaho Department of Commerce & Development unveiled Idaho's 750 square foot Expo 74 exhibit to open May 4 in Spokane. The Idaholand theme features a 250 square foot resting area with a living display of Idaho trees and a carpeted lounge. The main exhibit spans one side of building B in the Parade of States area and showcases Idaho’s beauty, ruggedness, resources, industry and recreation through art, cabins, ranch imagery, and rough beam architecture.
