Arson Probe Ordered For Priest River House Fire

State arson investigator summoned to determine if the Sunday night blaze that destroyed the Priest River home of William Darden was arson. Sheriff Robert Wilcox said no one was home and the specialist will arrive Tuesday at no county cost. Darden’s car was burned in a separate incident about three weeks earlier after a threatening letter. Authorities have the premises secured.

Malad Assesses Quake Damage

Malad City area officials assess total quake damage from a sequence of earthquakes since March 26. The initial 4.7 event was followed by a 6.4 quake near Malad City on the Idaho Utah border with hundreds of aftershocks. Public buildings including the Pleasant View LDS chapel sustained heavy damage and farming areas show grain losses and shattered homes.

Sandpoint Boys Admit Starting Two Fires

Three boys aged 8 9 and 10 from Sandpoint confessed to police that they deliberately started two fires in the past week one Tuesday in an old warehouse area behind EJ's Auto Supply and another on Saturday at the same site.

SHS Student Wins National Writing Second Place

Sandpoint High School journalism student Jim Borden earned second place in the news writing category at a national contest in Los Angeles hosted by the National Scholastic Press Association and the Journalism Education Association. Two Lewiston students also won second place, Bill McMahon in editorial writing and Rick Steiner in feature writing.

City to Vote on Firefighters Contract Between City and Union

The Sandpoint City Council likely to approve a contract with the International Firefighters union at the next meeting. Fireman Jack McElroy warned a failure to sign could push the issue to court over constitutionality, noting Idaho case losses and vowing no strike if court action occurs. He said the city favors an agreement sans union but will remain with the union for this year.

Boy Serious From Shotgun Wound in Idaho

NAMPA Idaho UPI Robert Reiter a 12 year old boy remains seriously ill after a shotgun wound to the pelvis from a hunting trip. A sheriff's deputy said the boy there thought the weapon was unloaded and accidents can happen in rural settings.

A fire reported Friday night damaged a mail collection box at Euclid and Lake Streets. The Sandpoint post office urges anyone who deposited mail after 3:30 p.m. to take corrective action. No postmark details available.
