Savannah reports last week’s clearings above seven million dollars, a rise of over four million from 1899, driven by cotton and naval stores prices and funds sent to country banks. Banks expect a massive Savannah season with cotton prices boosting Georgia’s gains.
In Macon on Sept 22 George Bowdre, a Black switchman, was decapitated when a moving switch engine ran over his neck in the Central railroad yard near Bay street. Bowdre, who worked all night, fell under the wheels while attempting to board the engine. His head rolled six feet away as the engineer halted the train. The body lay on one side of the track with the head on the other.
In Lyons Georgia on September 22, all washerwomen quit work after a belief that the election would lead to white mortgage of negro property for a white school. Negro women, especially washerwomen, took their families clothes home unreadied, declaring they would no longer wash for white residents.
J D Martin proprietor of the Fitzpatrick hotel, former manager of the Hotel Johnson, left Washington for Mobile to recruit staff and has not been heard from for a week. Creditors allege he has skipped leaving his family and the hotel in doubt as I M Fitzpatrick & Bro own the property. Mrs Martin and the children are missing.
