Mayor Cheatham and the city council invited the newly elected mayor and council to a called meeting at City Hall to discuss changes to the city charter. The session ran 7:30 to 10:30 with unanimous consensus on reforms and emphasis on expanding powers to support schools and public health.
The county chain gang began work on the court house yard last Tuesday under Superintendent Hodges and J. W. Newman. Seventeen convicts and several free laborers are employed. Teams cleared low areas, removed rotted trees, and prepared the ground for sod and flowers. Citizens praise the commissioners for this project in Sandersville and across the county.
March Monroe, recently escaped from the city chain gang and serving city court sentences, was captured at Tennille by Sheriff Moye. He returns to the city gang and will soon be handed to Washington county authorities for a long county chain gang term. Monroe, a familiar police court figure, faced multiple city convictions.
The Third Quarterly Conference of the Davisboro and New Hope charge meets at New Hope on Saturday June 1 with Rev Geo W Matthews presiding elder. He will preach at 11 am sun time, dinner at noon, and the official session at 12:80. A good sermon and dinner are promised. the public is cordially invited. W A Brooks P C
In a spirited session, the council discussed raising the mayor's salary due to added duties since the fixed old rate. While suggesting improvements on other issues, members supported embedding the salary change in the legislative bill. Citizens would have found the discussion insightful as the administration pledges attentive city governance.
The Sandersville High School commencement events run May 27 to May 29 in the auditorium. Mrs Wood and Miss Mitchell and Miss Park lead May 27 program, May 28 features a pupil play directed by Prof W M Goodwin, and May 29 holds the graduation ceremony at 7:45 PM.
Prof. Goodwin who for three years led Sandersville High School resigns at term end to pursue legal studies. Patrons and students express sincere regret, noting his universal satisfaction and the earnest benefit to boys and girls taught by him.
The Mary Ann Williams Chapter United Daughters of the Confederacy records the death of Miss Eva Gallaher with sorrow. The resolution praises her loyalty and faithful service to the chapter and requests minutes, press, and family copies of the notice.
All persons are warned not to trade for or accept a promissory note recently lost payable to W. B. Francis and signed by the Davisboro Cotton Oil and Guano Co. Endorsed by W. B. Francis I. J. Taylor T. L. Brown O. H. P. Beal W. J. Henderson and W. Thomas. The note is for one thousand dollars dated Sept 11 1906 due Sept 11 1907. Finder report to THE HERALD.
The Wrightsville Chronicle reprints Maj Callaway of the Macon Telegraph discussing Georgia Farmers Union ties to a Western labor group. He claims the western ally is the Farmers Laborers Union, notes name changes in the South, and questions motives behind an 8 hour labor law resolution pushed by Georgia union leaders. He warns of a hidden alliance with western laborers and urges Georgia farmers to learn the true aims of the allied groups.
