William Joyce Sewell, United States Senator, was laid to rest at Harleigh Cemetery after services at his Camden mansion. Notables including Secretary of War Root and governors attended as troops fired graveside salutes.
In Columbus Ohio Dec 81 both Senator Foraker and Senator Hanna claim to secure votes to organize the legislature but neither side has a majority. Nine undecided House members hold the balance while Foraker loyalists push Price for speaker aided by Cox and local interests. The Foraker camp aims to control the Senate, risking a split in honors.
Uriah Porter, accused of killing Joseph Fincher and spreading fear in Crawford and Russell county, surrendered to Deputy Sheriff John L. Moon and is jailed in Lee county. Porter cited mob fear and said reports of his actions were exaggerated. Local relief followed his surrender as residents hoped for safety.
BITZEN DID MURDEROUS WORK Shot Wife Son Daughter and Clerk. Two Died. Louis Bitzen a jeweler is accused of fatally shooting his wife and two children along with clerk Ida Cullom in Turners Falls Massachusetts. Police report the boy and Miss Cullom died shortly after. Bitzen was arrested.
The American Historical Association closed its session in Washington with a focus on Southern history. Papers on the London Company records, Virginia planter and London merchant relations, Nathaniel Macon, Maryland courts, Southwestern history, and the University of Texas were presented by scholars from William and Mary, Randolph-Macon, Johns Hopkins, University of Texas, and other institutions.
A strong norther from the Caribbean blew ashore at 5 pm causing seas to swell and ship traffic to struggle. The Norwegian Hero, en route from Baltimore to Colon, was driven ashore at Christopher Colombia while other steamers reached Porto Bello. Pacific Mail docks and other property suffered damage.
Judge Lunn of the federal court ordered a public sale in about a month of all property of the Superior Consolidated Land company, real and personal, valued at about 400000 dollars. Colonel Thomas C. Herndon of New Orleans, longtime manager of the clearing house, died at 72. He was born in Butaw Alabama and served in the Confederate army.
In Wasiuxatox Dr Talmage extols the nativity scene. He lauds Mary and child guided by Jesus and praises the animals in the Bethlehem stable. He notes God honors childhood science and shepherds, urging reverence for fields and rural life as central to history and faith.
