Georgia Chautauqua at Albany Georgia on April 20 to 27 1902 with travel by Central of Georgia Railway one round trip fare plus 25 cents Chautauqua admission. Military in Uniform pay one cent per mile each way. Tickets on sale April 19 26 inclusive final return limit April 28 1902.
Cairo April 22 Underwriters visit the wreck today as rescue efforts proceed but no new bodies are found. Officials estimate about 140 aboard and 75 saved leaving roughly 70 unaccounted for. A corrected list names 22 crew lost and several passengers including L. L. Hunter Tidoute Pa Mrs Brown Memphis and others. The disaster claims a wide mix of crew and passengers with long lists of names and stories still submerged.
Maryland day at the exposition featured a Baltimore business men delegation led by Lawrence Kemp visiting Charleston. The afternoon included Maryland and Charleston business talks at the Maryland building amid entertainments. A Jersey City burglar named James Cotter broke into a house housing a smallpox patient. He entered through the basement and was found wandering when the resident’s daughter screamed, drawing an officer. Cotter faces strict quarantine for 21 days.
Dallas hosts the twelfth annual reunion of the United Confederate Veterans with 75,000 to 126,000 visitors expected. The event features speeches by General J B Condor and Governor Sayres, songs of the South, and a planned turning of the city keys to General Gordon amid a grand procession and festival atmosphere at Camp Albert Sydney Johnson.
In Cleveland on April 22 Mrs. Sarah Lynch 75 was found shot dead at 608 Toad street. Her husband Martin Lynch 60 was arrested on murder charges, with a bloodstained condition and a freshly loaded revolver found inside the home. Neighbors heard no quarrel and a fifth shot remained in the wall. Lynch says he found his wife dead on returning from work.
Pittsburg April 22 Henry Stump a West Pennsylvania railroad engineer was shot while aiding a freight train in Willow Grove. The crew confronted burglars who had robbed a tollhouse safe. Stump was hit three times and likely to die. The thieves escaped leaving the safe.
Chicago April 20. In Jefferson Park Presbyterian Church Rev. Frank De Witt Talmage delivered a sermon paying a touching tribute to his father, the renowned pulpit orator. He described his father as both original and natural, a tireless worker who transformed preaching, shed old sectarian trappings, and taught quality over quantity, while warning against overwork and insomnia that shorted his later years.
