Roger Longley of San Saba received notice this week that he won an Opportunity Award at Texas A M College. Among 215 graduates, he was one of 50 selected on scholarship, leadership, character and need. The award provides 200 to 300 dollars yearly for four years plus odds for extra aid. He plans to study forestry and wildlife conservation.

Old Settlers Gather for Annual San Saba Reunion
Rev. W L White opened the San Saba County Old Settlers Association homecoming at the old fair park by the San Saba river. Attendees enjoyed registration, visiting, music, free barbecue, and a basket dinner with entertainment from a string band and a colored quartet. A memorial for 47 deceased since August 1947 was read by Mrs. A J Duncan. Fiddlers contest crowned Hugh Hubert winner with J H Randolph second and Dan Miller third. Speakers included W Q Yarborough, Bill Millican and Tom Speak. Performers included Benton Miller, Raymond Roberson, Sorell Smith, Mr Price of Brownwood, Mrs Bess Patterson, and John Mayberry, C M Williams, Richard Kinmen and John Kinmen. Masters of ceremonies were R E Gray in the morning and Reuben Senterfitt in the afternoon.

The San Saba News joined peers at the 66th Texas Press Association meeting in San Antonio as Weslaco News won best weekly newspaper for towns over 2,900. Mission Times Weslaco News and San Saba News earned Beard awards for best set ads. Draft Bill Passed To Induct Youth For Service
Congress approved a peacetime draft to conscript hundreds of thousands aged 15 to 25 for 21 months in uniform. A San Saba County Draft Board will be formed, with appointments by President Truman upon governor nomination. Induction can start 90 days after law, with deferrals for students and guards joining allowed to avoid service. Veterans with active service after December 7, 1941, or 90 days between 1941 and 1945 may be exempt.

Injured in Accident Involving Bill Bradshaw
Bill Bradshaw son of Mrs I Louise Bradshaw suffered facial cuts and body bruises after an auto crash Sunday night near the Gou thwaite route while returning to town. He said he momentarily dozed as he reached the railroad underpass north of town and lost control of the car.
