Cherokee leads the San Saba County Softball Tournament at Memorial Park after beating the Pioneers last Thursday. McMillin holds second place after beating Texaco. WEW remains third after a split. Upcoming schedule features Algerita, Pioneers, VEW, and Spring Creek in multiple matchups.
Calvin Daniel Jr. hosted a Friday noon luncheon in the school lunch room honoring four senior class teachers Miss Edna Katherine Peel Miss Teau jine Roberts Miss Ruth Rand and Miss Helen Lidstone. A steak dinner was served.
Suni M. Campbell announces three high achievers from San Saba High School. Bonnie Miffleton tops with 97.58 average and valedictorian, Patsy Farley 96.83 as salutatorian, and Calvin Daniel Jr. 94.2 for the boys' scholarship. Miffleton plans to study journalism or languages at the University of Texas. Farley will major in piano at Abilene Christian College after a graduation piano recital. Daniel will pursue accounting at Nixon-Clay Commercial College in Austin. All three joined Quill and Scroll for high school journalists.
A Youth Revival at First Baptist Church runs Sunday to June 13 with four university students leading all services music and fellowship. weekday services at 9 am and 8 pm and 11 am Sunday. Preachers include Warren Hultgren and William Dyal Jr with Ross Coggins directing singing and Fay Elaine Wellborn guiding social activities.
Kemp Anderson son of Rev and Mrs T K Anderson earned a Bachelor of Science in journalism from McMurry College Abilene and received a $900 master’s fellowship to Oklahoma A&M College Stillwater. He will teach journalism and handle administrative duties while pursuing a major in industrial journalism after visiting San Saba with his parents.
Amthor Motor Co buys a Luscombe two passenger airplane Monday in Levelland for business and pleasure use by the firm. George Amthor says Brack Tipscomb of Lipscomb Sinclair Station will fly it. Tipscomb has years of commercial and army piloting experience and Amber plans to obtain a pilot license soon. The plane is stored temporarily at Carter field about one and a half miles east of town.
Due to Memorial Day postal holiday on Monday, most community correspondence arrived too late for this issue. The News apologizes for the omission and will publish the letters next week.
A general committee led by Lee Hawisher, W. T. Little and J. W. Edwards was formed at a San Saba Lions Club luncheon to plan improvements for Risien Falls and Pool for summer swimming. The club accepted responsibility after E. Guy Risien offered use of the property, aiming for temporary facilities and Red Cross swim courses. Work includes cleaning the concrete tank and river pool, road winding, gate construction and grounds work with club members. Lifeguard attendance is planned during swimming hours.
The canning center opened Wednesday at the Home Economics building. Anyone needing pressure cookers or sealers tested can bring them on Monday. Tom J. Henry, the vocational teacher, will handle checks. Regular hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday each week.
The New Hope Presbyterian Church at Sloan marks its forty seventh anniversary with Sunday services led by Rev. William Arnold of San Saba at 3 p.m. A reunion of pioneers and current members follows a worship service and barbecue near the church. Dr. Greer began his pastorate May 31, 1947, as the church reports 17 new members, vacation Bible school, a Women's Auxiliary, midweek prayer services, and total year contributions of 22816.37 including benevolence and building funds.
George Tiorten Jr was admitted to MeCruskey Veterans Hospital in Temple last week with an undiagnosed illness. He shows signs of improvement this week with a suspected meningitis and a slight paralysis around the arms and eyelids, though overall condition improves.
Plans are progressing for the June 17 to 19 rodeo with pens completed and livestock rebates arranged. The rodeo committee names judges Claude Knight Sanford Tune and Mrs Harvey Bacon and lists prize divisions and parade entries while coordinators organize prizes for best dressed cowboy and most typical couple.
Funeral services for William Carroll Biggs 82 a retired farmer were held Wednesday at 10 30 AM from the First Methodist Church with Rev T K Anderson of Rog officiating He died Monday evening at his home on the China Creek road He was born March 6 1866 in Mount Enterprise Texas Survivors include his widow four daughters a son a brother and a sister pallbearers were Joe Smith Roy Grumbles Frank Hendrix Jim Walker Walker Kirkpatrick and Dick Keyser Burial was in the Odd Fellows Cemetery with Howell Doran Funeral Home in charge
Piano students from the class of Mrs. L. T. Smith will give two recitals this week. The first is tonight Thursday at 8 o clock in the high school gym. A second group performs Friday at 3 o'clock in the gym. The public is invited.
Nominees for San Saba Junior Chamber of Commerce offices were announced by the nominating committee. If approved, they will appear on the ballot at the June 11 election, with several candidates named for president and vice presidents and other offices.
Jaycee Secretary Sam Cobern announces a booster trip to promote the San Saba World Championship Rodeo. The caravan, escorted by a Highway Patrol unit, departs San Saba at 7 30 AM Friday June 11 visiting Lometa Lampasas Burnet Llano Mason Brady Calhman Santa Anna Brownwood and Goldthwaite before returning. Louis M Crump and Marlis Barker organize the preparations.
Scattered thundershowers benefited sections of the county with the heaviest precipitation in the east. Bend and Chappel reported 1.25 inches, Cherokee a light sprinkle, Harkeyville one inch, Alg erita traces, Wimberley 0.4 inch, Richland Springs a sprinkle. San Saba measured 0.4 inch. Last week’s rain brought the month total to 2.59 inches and the year to date to 11.00 inches. Precipitation by month lists January 11% inches, February 3.04 inches, March 11.2 inches, April 4.08 inches, May 2.50 inches.
An 18 hole miniature golf course is under construction on the Harris lot on West Wallace Street and completion is expected within ten days or two weeks. The course is being built and will be operated by George Edwards. He has visited many similar courses in Fort Worth Dallas and other cities for ideas of construction.
All chairmen and members of Old Settlers committees are urged to attend a meeting Saturday at 2 am in San Saba. The Old Settlers Association secretary S B Kelly announced plans for the spiritual Old Settlers Reunion on June 18 connected with the 10th annual Sai Saba World Championship Races. Congressman C C Fisher urged individual contribution to the American way of life at the San Saba High School commencement. Forty nine graduates received diplomas in the gymnasium as valedictorian Corie Miffliton spoke on a greater better world and salutatorian Pat Parley discussed the future our own. Diplomas were presented by J W Edwards as Sunday baccalaureate services were held, with names listed for both boys and girls graduates.
