Honor Roll List Honors 812 Students in San Saba Schools

San Saba schools released the second six weeks honor roll with 75 straight A students. Senior top honorees include Nettie Clark and Oma Clark among others, followed by lists for juniors, sophomores, and freshmen with many named pupils across grades. A and B honor roll also noted with numerous students listed.

Santa to Visit Again Saturday in San Saba

The jolly Santa Claus returns to San Saba this Saturday invited by Hopper & Walker and Laird's Corner Drug Store. He will be at the two stores Thursday, Friday, and again Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. with candy for children sharing Christmas wishes.

Showers Aid Parched Texas Areas in Mid-December

Rainfall varied across San Saba county with totals up to 1.35 inches in the southeast. Cherokee logged 1.10 inches and .25 on Wednesday, Bend and Chappel reported .87, San Saba .23 and traces. Other sites like Algerita Harkeyville Richland Springs saw light sprinkles while temperatures climbed into the 80s as a mild cold front moved into Texas.

Billy Lewis is Reburied in Richland Springs

Reburial services for Pfc. Billy J. Lewis, killed in action with the 79th Infantry Division in France on Nov. 14, 1944, were held Sunday afternoon from the Baptist Church in Richland Springs with Rev. Holmes and Rev. Van Martin officiating. Lewis, who lived in Richland Springs, served from July 16, 1943, and fought in Normandy, Northern France and the Rhineland. He is survived by his parents, two brothers, a sister, and grandparents. Full military honors were provided by Richland Springs veterans with a color guard, firing squad and buglers.

San Saba Quintet Wins First District Game

The San Saba High basketball team beat Mason 28 to 11 in their first district contest, then will pause district play for the holidays. Starters were Graydon Cavness Bill Moore and Bill McDaniel at forwards, and Bill Owen and James Reavis at guards. Substitutes included Dick Felts Eddie Edwards and Morris Reavis. Cavness Moore and McDaniel led scoring.

Cousin Is Reburied At Sweetwater

C C Montgomery of San Saba reports the body of his cousin Pie Grover Murl Montgomery was returned from overseas to Sweetwater. A native of the county, Montgomery was killed in action April 14 1945 in Italy after being wounded March 1 1945. A bronze medal sent posthumously to his mother notes wounds from an enemy mine in the right leg.

Gonzales Fund Drive Opens in San Saba County

Clay Kuykendall chairs seven committee members and local leaders across 17 San Saba county communities in a countywide drive for Gonzales Warm Springs Foundation for crippled children. No door solicitation, mail letters with bank drafts, donations funneled to Gonzales or Kuykendall or Rev. White at City National Bank. county quota set at $1,000.

First Baby Contest Set in San Saba County 1949

The 1949 San Saba first baby contest opens for entries from babies born in the county to residents of the trade area. Deadline is January 5. Prizes include a $10 hospital credit, $7.50 cash, and gifts from local merchants.

Soldier Killed While Aiding Officer Receives Medals

A serviceman died while assisting a severely wounded officer en route to an aid station. He was posthumously awarded a bronze medal and his mother received two Purple Hearts, plus EAME campaign, Victory, and Rifle medals.

Grain Drills Made Available Through LCRA Program

The Lower Colorado River Authority provides three ten foot grain drills with fertilizer disperser and grass seeding gear to San Saba county farmers and ranchers. Custodians are Ted Wright Beaumont Hiler and Maynard McCoury. A $2.99 daily charge supports repair and maintenance of the machines. Wright showcases rye and vetch planting on 30 acres plus 40 acres of rye as a winter cover crop to be incorporated before spring planting.

Firemen Answer Two Calls From Cherokee

San Saba volunteer firefighters answered two calls from Cherokee recently. One Friday at the Salt Branch schoolhouse on the Cherokee campus burned after a stove defect. The other Tuesday morning the Daugherty residence burned when an oil stove exploded as Mr. Daugherty tried to light it. He suffered burns needing doctor care. All household possessions were lost.

State Semi Finals Clash at Brownwood High Stadium

Monahatis and New London meet at Brownwood High Stadium at 2 PM Saturday to decide who faces the New Braunfels or Falfurrias winner for the State Conference A title. Quarterfinals saw Monahangs 13 7 over Phillips and New London 88 12 over Irving. Nearby, New Braunfels defeated Van 23 18 and Falfurrias beat Aldine 14 13.

Delegates Named for San Saba ACA Delegation Election

Delegates selected December 11 in community elections will meet Saturday morning in San Saba to elect a county committee for the 1949 Agricultural Conservation Association farm program. FFA Banquet Slated January 7 in San Saba

The San Saba FFA chapter plans its annual Father and Son Banquet for Friday night January 7 in the school lunch room. About six chapter members and their dads will be served fried chicken, along with invited guests. Former Lone Star Partner members are asked to contact advisor Tom J. Henry. Catalogs go out on stock show in San Saba

More than 500 stock show catalogs were distributed in San Saba by Vocational Agriculture students for the 16th annual San Saba County FFA and 4-H Club Fat Stock Show set for Thursday January 15. Entries include 19 calves 149 sheep and up to 75 hogs from San Saba Richland Springs Cherokee and nearby districts with prizes totaling over 650.01 dollars.

New Directors Named At Jaycee Meeting

Seven new directors were elected at the San Saba Junior Chamber of Commerce December meeting attended by about 60 people at the Jaycee hall. Elected were J. W. McDaniel Leon Hartley Glenn Williamson W. E. Bryant Jack Sullivan Clavis Ledbetter and Charles Chrane. W. C. Yarborough a Corpus Christi wholesale coffee dealer spoke on capital and labor. An open discussion among present members suggested New Year’s Day Saturday will not be observed as a holiday locally.

Music Store To Open In Estep Building

J M Edwards of San Angelo has bought the hardware stock and leased the Estep building on the court house square to open Edwards Hardware Music House. Remodeling is underway and a large stock of pianos and musical instruments will be moved in late this week or early next. The store remains open for current merchandise. Jack Edwards will handle repairs and sales until remodeling is finished. George DeVoll and Sons are remodeling contractors. Edwards operates musical shops in San Angelo and Monahans and claims one of West Texas largest stocks of musical merchandise.

Death of Gary Moore Aged 84 Remains in San Antonio

Gary Moore aged 84 son of and Mrs Bills Moore of San Antonio was hospitalized after a serious illness. Mr and Mrs Ben Hard with family and others visited the bedside. Mr and Mrs Wo Th Chee Pack and Ben Mossman visited earlier in the week. No change reported in the child's condition.
