The San Marino Woman's Club closed its third year at Huntington School Auditorium on June 21 with a program featuring McGaw and Knox in a three act life of Wagner. Officers for 1938-39 were installed and a tea followed with hostesses Carver Kruger Scott and others serving amidst pastel floral table settings.
The Flower and Garden Guild held its final gathering of the year at Mrs. H S Bergstrom home on Friday morning June 23 Miss Azalea Beam spoke on perennials for small and large gardens Mrs A M Gibbs chairs the group which maintains strong attendance over fifty despite a late start It ran a weekly corsage making class with Miss Patterson of Santa Monica as instructor and expresses great satisfaction with its year of work.
Plans for a new concrete grandstand at Roosevelt field South Pasadena are supervised by Theodore C. Kistner. The project costs 63332 dollars with 45265 dollars from the federal WPA and 18067 dollars from the school district. The structure will seat 2100, be 218 feet long and seventeen rows high centering on the fifty yard line. Showers and lockers may be added later. Construction starts shortly after August 1.
Fire Chief Chester Copley cautions San Marino residents as the dry season peaks raising fire risk. Last week two brush fires sparked by burning trash were reported in San Gabriel, while another grass fire on June 21 near 1835 California Street was extinguished.
The 14th annual summer tour of California began last Monday from the Southwestern Military Academy with 8 to 14 year old cadets aboard covered wagons. The itinerary includes San Francisco World's Fair, Redwood Empire, Oregon Caves, Redwoods Fort Bragg Fort Ross and visits to Bakersfield Fresno Sacramento Ukiah Eureka Oakland San Jose Santa Cruz Santa Barbara Monterey and more. Return is planned for Saturday August 12 at 2 p.m. with the fall session starting September 12.
Southwestern Military Academy held its June 16 commencement with cadets Kahn and Doud delivering speeches on We the People and Land that We Love. Major Veronda presented diplomas as the program included orchestra, colors, pledges, and a class gift. Earlier season highlights featured two successful plays Not On the Program and Junior, directed by Mrs Maurice Veronda.

R G Kenyon of 2805 Carlaris Road and advertising manager for Southern California Edison Company Ltd. received two certificates of award at the Public Utilities Advertising association annual convention in New York City. The firm’s newspaper advertising won merit for public relations and the premier award for merchandise ads among a nationwide field. Edison has competed since 1934 and the contest is the oldest of its kind.
Louise Liebhardt of 990 Afton road is chosen president of Theatre Americana Altadena for the coming season. The group plans five plays starting in October with Fergus Reddie returning as director and a slate of officers and directors announced.
San Marino Rotary Club hosts noon luncheon with attorney Stanley M. Arndt as guest speaker. He will discuss independence, noted for directness and pungency of expression. Meeting at the Hotel Huntington.
Librarians at the American Library Association convention in San Francisco protested the appointment of Archibald Leish as Librarian of Congress citing inexperience though he is a Pulitzer Prize winner. The Senate must confirm the appointment. Elizabeth Enright won the Newberry Award for Thimble Summer and Thomas Handforth earned the Caldecott Award for Mei Li at a June 20 banquet at the St Francis Hotel.
With the Fourth of July upcoming residents of San Marino are reminded it is against city ordinance and for safety. Four mail boxes were destroyed by firecrackers on Lombardy Road Santa Anita Avenue and Robave.
A letter to Mr and Mrs Charles R Compton of 1230 Lorain Road stated their son Bob was elected City Treasurer at the Boys State meeting in Sacramento from June 24 to July 1. He was selected by South Pasadena San Marino High School as top San Marino junior for scholarship and leadership. The San Marino Post of the American Legion funds his trip as part of civic leadership program.
Five San Marino students joined 139 graduates in Pomona College’s forty sixth annual class earning Bachelor of Arts degrees. Margaret Burkholder completed her work in February. Preston Hill, Helen Houston, Clinton Kelley, and Richard Turner also earned degrees and were noted for leadership in drama, glee clubs, golf, track, and other extracurriculars at Pomona.
Three officers apprehended Burton Fitzgerald of 2913 Olive Altadena after citizens and an officer reported a possible drunk driving incident Tuesday night shortly before midnight. He resisted arrest and was handcuffed to be jailed overnight awaiting a $250 bail posting.
Mrs Anne B Lefler of 2561 Raleigh Drive hosted a garden luncheon at Garden Rendez-Vous then led the Woman's Club of South Pasadena meeting. New president San Marinan outlined plans for the year with officers W C Rowse C J Herlocker Norman MacDonald W S Matson Luther J Lee Grover MacDonald George Cleary A M Mason Burton E Heartt and appointees Charles Kite O H Emmons and A L Spring.
Boulder Dam power was linked to Southern California Edison when the first 110 000 horsepower generator began service. The unit started without ceremony as the line started generating power to the Edison system via a 223 mile 220 000 volt transmission line to Chino. The Boulder plant is Edison's twenty seventh generating station and the new unit is number seventy in operation. total Edison capacity reaches 1 278 000 horsepower with Boulder. Edison hydro plants now total 23 across California with hydro capacity 769 000 horsepower.
San Marino Boy Scout leaders announce Elmer C Neher superintendent of schools will serve as Dean of Counsellors and Merit Badge counsellor. The board will operate under the Court of Honor and Advancement, with counsellors for required badges and popular ones also available. A full list will appear in the Tribune soon.
Assistant teacher will join Huntington Playschool to handle larger primary enrollment of 60 students. Classes run July 3 with flag ceremony, July 4 off. Pupils craft wooden boats planes and trains, puppets, and prepare shows for July 7. Baseball practices, badminton and tennis tournaments, and a July plane contest augment activities with prizes donated by San Marino merchants.
California Public Utilities Commission cut rates for Southern California Gas Co. by 1.305 million dollars total, with San Marino residents saving about 4650 yearly. Reductions include 12 cents per 1000 cubic feet in the 1800 block and 7 cents in the next 1900 block. meter readings post June 30 bring uniform savings across areas.
New residents are advised that door to door solicitors or peddlers are prohibited by ordinance in San Marino and are requested to notify the police department at once if approached. The ordinance protects privacy, peace and pocketbooks of residents.
The City Council protest against the On Sale Beer and Wine license for Gust D Vrahnos of Pierre's Fine Foods triggers a public hearing at City Hall 10 AM Saturday. The June 19 protest to the State Board of Equalization requires attendance notices to civic groups and invites citizens to speak.
June building permits show additions to homes totaling 14, higher than the 10 new-home permits issued. The single new-home permit went to John W. Field of 2916 Ross Avenue Los Angeles for a five room one story Colonial at 1604 Hilliard costing 5250. Other permits included Don Linnard for a fence 35, J J Lauer for a 210 wall, and Gail Vandebraak for a 600 addition at 2035 Lombardy Road.
