The War Price and Ra- Board chair W. McAfee announced new A ration books will be distributed to gas stations in the city this week and hold 6 coupons good for four gallons of gasoline until mid July. Applications for motorcycle books will also be available at the same time.
A minor accident in Monterey Park last Friday involved a police car. Officer McNeish stopped an iron car that rolled back and struck the police vehicle causing damage to the front fender. An injured child was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
San Marino Red Cross reports Bank Day a success with full on hand quota. Thanks go to the San Marino and Fire Departments, Valentine Parent Teacher Association, San Marino Women, and the PTA for meals, care of children during appointments, and use of buildings. Nurses Aide course starts July 5 with aim to graduate August 21, open to age 18 and up, 80 Mondays and Fridays, 150 hours yearly service after graduation.
San Marino children will join the Public Library Vacation Reading Club as the Book Army. Induction is set for Thursday July 1 1943 at 2 p m at the library. Members will choose a branch of the Armed Services and receive its insignia seal at summer''s end.
The Oneonta Club held its closing ladies night at the Huntington hotel Milton G Kerr was named man of the year and received the past president's badge John P Whitmore presented the award Kerr installed the coming year's officers Charles E Bent president H Stanley Bent Walter G Pfaffenberger Albert T Case Hugh S Wallace Carl A Plath and others serve as directors The George C Bush memorial cup honored the finance committee for the best program in the season The prize program was chaired by Charles E Bent and a 20 year club history was noted Turn to page seven.
James C. Sheppard of this city was named chairman of the Ninth Regional Civilian Defense board, resigning as United States civilian defense director for eight western states. The board will gain power to coordinate war programs from top to bottom with state and local councils aiding planning and execution across manpower, food, salvage, rationing, housing, and more.
Preston Hotchkis president of the California State Chamber of Commerce announces a state wide manpower committee to coordinate demands from armed forces war production agriculture and civilian industries. Alfred J Lundberg of Oakland named chairman with other appointees from San Francisco Salinas Los Angeles Burbank Oakland and Petaluma.
San Marinans donated 227 pints on Blood Bank Day, beating the usual 55 donors per hour. By 2 pm the bank had stored the total, though 12 donors did not appear and six were cancelled. Capt. Charles Terry Kile led the team with Mrs Whittemore, Mrs Roy, and other staff praised for smooth operation in Pasadena.
Mrs. A. E. Sears, service chairman of the local American Red Cross chapter, says gifts to all prisoners of war held by the enemy may be sent through the Red Cross. The organization will send standard gift parcels and accept orders to all war prisoners and internees in enemy territories. For US and British Empire citizens, the Board of Economic Warfare offers an optional parcel post method, provided shipments follow Current Export Bulletin No. 100.
San Marino Rotary Club hosted neighboring cities clubs for an inter city gathering in Alhambra. Dr. Edd Norwood and his program committee set a strong program featuring Mrs. Spencer Tracy speaking on behalf of deaf infant care. Eighteen Rotarians attended the round table last Thursday at Pierre's. President Guy Lauderbaugh announced another round table today at noon.
San Marino starts its first Girl Scout Day Camp on Tuesday July 6 at Huntington school grounds Sherwood Avenue One. Two three week sessions run 9 30 a m to 3 30 p m on Tuesdays and Thursdays under trained camp directors. Fees cover camp costs per session.
Doris Eldred daughter of Mr and Mrs Delos N Eldred of Warwick road was one of the commencement orators and earned first honor scholarship and a $300 Occidental College competitive scholarship. She led the Girls League and held roles in Senate Club French Club Allied Youth and Tri Y. She received the Daughters of the American Revolution citizenship award and earned an L P athletic letter. Other stars included Kathryn Ogier winner of the $200 Carver scholarship Lois Lee Knight Girls League vice president and Theodore Charles Hinkley Jr class orator.
Lt. William A. Moses II, Army Air Force bombardier and son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur C. Moses of South Pasadena, reports from Kriegs fangenenlager that life in prison camp is dull yet filled with interesting men. He notes nine hours of sleep, diet supplement needs, and the regular Red Cross mail and packages arriving every two months. He asks for books and heavy clothing in a later letter.
The Searchlight Unit at Lacy Park gained comfortable quarters thanks to Mrs. Roy Ensign of the local Red Cross Camp and Hospital Service committee. She furnished the old scout house end with couches chairs and lamps, making the service men feel at home. The unit, commanded by Sergeant Perry, is preparing for further training before overseas service.
Maj Staats of Orlando Road named commanding officer of a new fully equipped State Guard battalion covering Pasadena to Pomona and mountains to Whittier hills. HQ at Pasadena State Guard Armory. units to be re equipped with arms ammunition and uniforms. Duties local. no deployment outside enlistment county.
James L. Beebe leads the Citizens’ Committee to Build the Cruiser Los Angeles with a $125,000 quota for San Marino. John A. Barton notes all Series E F and G bond purchases count toward the cruiser drive totals as the county funds a $40 million first line battleship. The campaign launches June 30 with Navy Secretary Frank Knox at the Biltmore Bowl luncheon and Hollywood Bowl event.
The Newspaperwomen's Association of San Gabriel Valley met at Miss Dorothe Rouche's Fontana home to install officers for 1943 44 and plan the year. New president Mrs Frank Hart and other officers were installed with corsages of defense stamps.
