Jeanette K. Arndt daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stamey Arndt was among four seniors at University School to win honorable mention for scholastic excellence and deliver the commencement address. Also cited were Ruth B. Cox Leonard L. Stahl Jr. and Bridgetta P. Lodaneff. Arndt spoke on The Good Neighbor Policy stressing solidarity in the Americas and mutual cultural exchange. Russell Richardson headmaster highlighted the wartime context and the theme Highways to Peace.

Summer Play School Opens in San Marino
San Marino's tenth annual summer play school opened with about 200 children on opening day. Sponsored by the San Marino Playground Commission, it offers activities from boys' shop to tennis and popular games. The program runs June 18 to July 27 with daily schedules, plus supervised play through September 8.

Eleanor Putnam to Teach Dancing at Local School
Eleanor Putnam, renowned for social development and dance in Whittier and Claremont, will conduct dancing classes for sixth to eighth graders under the Henry E. Huntington PTA. She has taught in Pomona College and Claremont programs since 1934 and later served as social director in Beverly Hills. Her husband Col. John R. Sewell was a POW in World War II. she also led Lockheed service organizations and has two daughters.

Lt. Robert B. Evans USNR of San Marino receives the Distinguished Flying Cross for aiding in repelling a strong Japanese fleet during the Leyte Gulf sea air battle. He previously served with the RAF and saw action at Saipan and Tinian before supporting the Leyte invasion. Evans attended Pomona College and holds the Air Medal.

Dr. Max Ferrand Dies at 76 a Huntington Library Leader
Historian Dr. Max Ferrand, longtime Huntington Library director and Yale professor, died Sunday at his Bar Harbor summer home.
