Friday night the Southwestern Military Academy on Monterey road held its commencement with a full Lincoln Hall audience of cadets’ parents and friends. The event closed a successful year and announced a summer trek starting June 23 with 30 cadets and seven teachers, the largest group since 1929.
Two San Marinans, Betty Burkholder of 978 Afton Road and Carey Bliss of 2440 Ridgeway, graduated Monday June 15 at Pomona College in twilight commencement exercises. Dr. Raymond C. Brooks delivered the address titled Unfinished Business for the Educated Man. Burkholder earned a Bachelor of Arts with music and student government roles noted, while Bliss earned a BA and was active in athletic team management.
Huntington Library ends a major exhibit on English and American constitutional law this Saturday June 27 and will unveil a new manuscript and book showcase on July 1. The legal exhibit has drawn members of the American Bar Association and more than 90 600 visitors, including Californians drawn to early California imprints and documents from the Spanish Southwest.
Chief Gene B. Wood awarded medals to six officers for expert marksmanship on the San Marino Police force. Gold went to M. E. Frank and Jess L. Black, silver to E. L. The Huntington P.T.A. recreation department concluded a successful ballroom dancing program judged by Dorothy Dearing the Fox actress. Winners in the older group were Morris Porter and Helen Hulsey first, Stuart Ruth and Adra Merrill second, Tom Norton and Dorothy Doerr third with Porter also performing a tap routine. Younger group winners were Frank Brooks and Dorothy Herbert first, Gordon Jackson and Virginia Conner second, Eddie McKenzie and Betty Loree Owen third.
Bruce Findlay served as main speaker as 254 graduates marked a historic class at South Pasadena High School. Three top students led the class without a single valedictorian or salutatorian, led by Larry Thompson Emily Harvey and Elza Mowry of San Marino. The class gift, a fountain for the Science Building, was presented by class president Dick Newton of San Marino.
A San Marino Business Association committee was formed to plan a San Marino exhibit for the Los Angeles County Fair at Pomona in September. Ellsworth K. Anderson appointed the committee’s president. Members include A. L. Gotterdam as chairman Sally Bohannon F Stanley Wood Fortner and Loud E B Cummings and others. The panel will study the exhibit’s advisability and prepare it, with the first official meeting set for Monday evening July 6.
Graduation exercises were held yesterday afternoon at the South Pasadena Junior High School Auditorium for 210 boys and girls. Bill Paul of San Marino won first place in the school oratorical contest on a closed campus. Kay Hogan delivered the class oration on Youth. The program included songs by the mixed chorus and solos by Bob Sands, Clarence Parmenter, Frances Ford and Dick Hucks. George C. Bush welcomed attendees. G Derwood Baker introduced the class. diplomas were presented by Fred W. Heath, president of the High School Board of Education.
Five San Marino students earned degrees at Stanford University during the 45th annual commencement in Memorial Chapel. A total of 1,065 degrees were awarded, including 702 bachelor of arts and 263 higher degrees, with Roy Morse Drew, Arthur Robert Daggett Jr, Charles Howard Fontius, Jack B. Ivey, and Charles Calvin Stanley Jr among the San Marino graduates receiving master of business administration and other degrees.
A Wednesday afternoon graduation in the new auditorium honored 43 graduates of the Henry E. Huntington school. D A R and American Legion awards went to John Rawling Lamoreaux Barbara Jean Thompson and Robert Ross Compton. Diplomas were presented by K L Carver after a program of tableaux and verse selections.
San Marino veterans eligible for World War II bonus payments have about half of them already paid, averaging around 26 dollars per capita. Approximately 150 San Marino veterans must be identifiable at the post office to receive envelopes, as pocket IDs or certifications are not acceptable.
