Catholic parishioners will mark the passing of Pope John XXIII with High Mass at noon Sunday June 9 at S Felicitas and Perpetua Church authorities said He died Monday night in Vatican City after a four day illness He was the 261st pope and was mourned as the Pope of Peace and Unity
City Manager Charles E. Martin announced Ed Russell will assume city clerk duties on June 16. Russell, a 12 year State Comptroller auditor based in Los Angeles, previously served as Lakewood finance officer. He holds a B S and an M S in public accounting from USC, lives in Long Beach, and is active in the League of California Cities Finance Officers Association. The appointment fills the vacancy left by Eugene C. Reedy’s death.
The San Marino Board of Education limited action to transportation and summer school. Summer school cuts were formalized while transportation services face heavy cuts next term. Merit pay increases were approved for teachers, with $400 for superior rated, $300 for above average, and $200 for average. Debate on kindergarten and other economy topics was curtailed.
The San Marino Chamber of Commerce says more jobs are needed as summer approaches. Executive secretary Ruth Thompson invites merchants, residents, and students to help by matching students with work. Funeral services for Harry G. Skinner of Lorain road were held Friday at Forest Lawn Wee Kirk of the Heather. The former Oak Knoll Pharmacy owner retired in 1948 and died last week in a Pasadena hospital. He leaves wife Ella a daughter Mrs Donald Treat a sister brother and two granddaughters. Entombment followed at Forest Lawn.
Alma Jensen 81 former owner of San Marino Pharmacy from 1927 to 1946 was laid to rest in Mountain View Mausoleum. He died a week ago and is survived by three children Ray A Jensen Gordon K Jensen five grandchildren and siblings Charles C Jensen J H Jensen and Ruth M Anderson all of Utah. Mrs Jensen died in 1951.
Judge Faries of the Los Angeles County Superior Court will discuss bench experiences at the San Marino Legion Post 239 meeting on Wednesday June 12. The event at Woody and Eddie's Restaurant starts with social hour at 6 p.m. dinner at 7 p.m. and program at 8 p.m. Master of ceremonies will be LA County District Attorney William B. McKesson. Conser, once of this city and former executive vice president of the California Real Estate Association, was named a Chevalier de Merite Francais Nationale by the French government in Chicago during the 14th Congress of the International Real Estate Federation. He now serves as executive vice president of the National Association of Real Estate Boards.

San Marino High School celebrated spring sports with banquets for tennis golf and baseball. The Titan tennis team won CIF again finishing 22 1 with Laguna Beach, while Jeff Lewis earned MVP and captaincy. Golf awarded varsity letters to Adams Allan Williams Wallace.
Richard Grosch named varsity baseball MVP after a season with a 0.85 ERA and four one hitters. Flip Wilson returns to baseball with strong rookie impact. San Marino board considers the 1963-64 Unified School District budget, trimming spending by 89,927 and proposing major economies including phased transport cuts and self supporting summer programs.
The regular San Marino City Council meeting is set for Wednesday June 12 at City Hall 2200 Huntington Drive. The session starts at 7 30 p m and may cover local issues and public input.
Alfred Hastings of Winston Avenue was chosen by Big Brothers of Greater Los Angeles for Hinshaw's fourth annual Community Dads Award. Dr Myron Olson of USC Education will speak at a luncheon at the Whit tier Office. Hastings is among several honored for building meaningful bonds with little brothers and helping them stay in school.
