Local War Finance Committee chairman John A. Barton announced a $1,900,000 quota for San Marino after a Southern California war bond leaders meeting. The drive will use 13 district canvassing teams, urging every citizen to buy bonds at home to support the war effort.
The Tribune prints this week pages eight and nine listing the Roll of Honor, names of Marine men and women serving in the armed forces. Addresses are limited by security rules. available addresses are kept on file at the library for interested readers. Some blanks arrived late and could not be included. those names will be filed with the library for public access. Extra copies are on sale at the office.
Sept E C Neher and Miss Edrys Nagel along with the school staff are arranging graduation in the school auditorium on the afternoon of June 14 Flag Day. One hundred twenty eight students of the 8A class will receive diplomas.
Five boys received Eagle Scout honors at a Monday night Court of Honor held in a school auditorium. Parents pinned badges while leaders and officials spoke on scouting value. awards included merit badges, first and second class ranks, and Star and Life Scout recognitions across Troops 1 through 5 sponsored by local organizations.
James P. Mackel former San Marino police court judge now holds a master's license and commands a turbo electric 530 foot steamship. The vessel carries 28 gun crew and gasoline for war fronts, with past two years totaling over 50 million gallons. He served as lieutenant commander in the Naval Reserve. wife and three children live on Cumberland Road.
Mrs. George J. O’Brien of Oak Grove Avenue smashed a bottle of California champagne against the bow of the 105,000 ton S. S. Kingsport Victory during its launch Monday night. Calship marks it as the 356th ocean going merchant ship launched. Joining the sponsor were Mrs. Harland F. Beardslee of Pasadena. Mrs. O’Brien is the wife of George J. O’Brien vice president of the Standard Oil Company of California.
Requiem mass was celebrated at Holy Family Church in South Pasadena for Julia Kessler who died May 25 at her home in San Marino. She originated from Elmira New York and lived in San Marino 11 years. Survived by husband Louis Kessler and three sisters Helen Cowley Betty Brogan and A L Tubach.
Lt. (j.g.) Culver J. Kennedy of San Marino led the Chung Cheng armed guard aboard the Liberty ship torpedoed in the Arabian Sea by an enemy submarine. Seventy two aboard, twenty lives lost. one lifeboat capsized leaving seventeen sailors afloat until daylight. Kennedy, a former Sears manager, and the ship named after Chiang Kai-shek, built at Kaiser yard in Richmond California. The vessel carried the Chinese flag and was the first Chinese flag merchant ship sunk in the war. Residing at 2735 Monterey Road, Kennedy reported the early morning haze prevented targeting.
War Department announces Dr Robert G Freeman formerly of 2170 Home t road now serves with the Army Medical Corps. Freeman led at Hoff General Hospital Santa Barbara for three years and heads a new reconditioning center. Huntington Library prepares Friends' Day events for June 5 featuring a temporary Jacobean room panel in the art gallery. A new exhibit Epochs of Print Making opens June 6, tracing graphic reproduction from woodcut to collotype. Gifts from Friends plus manuscript corrections by famous authors will be displayed. Gardens with rhododendrons and cymbidiums are expected to be in bloom.
The Pasadena Council of Girl Scouts reports the recent Broadway Pasadena flower show secured funds for seven day camps and overnight camps in San Marino and Pasadena. Troops sold many advance tickets with troop 34 led by Mrs. Ross Munro achieving top sales. Diane Gardner led with 49 tickets sold followed by Beverly Alden with 29. Singing Pines Del Dia camp registrations opened under Mrs. Eugene Coughlin with July sessions running July 5 to 27 on three days per week from 9 to 3:30.
The county wide Clothing for Russia drive concluded with about 600 pounds collected in San Marino. Russian cargo ships will transport the garments to Russia, while Southern California contributions head to Portland for final sorting before loading aboard ships. Volunteers and residents are thanked for their high quality and ready-to-use clothing, with continued donations accepted at the Hollywood shipping center.
Pfc. Eugene L. Reagan son of Mr and Mrs Earl B Reagan of 2848 Cumberland Road San Marino earned the Silver Wings at Harlingen Army Air Field Texas as part of the seven week aerial gunnery course He was nicknamed Sharpshooters of the Sky for his training which covered weapon fire turret work aircraft recognition and weapon assembly under blindfolded conditions He completed the program by firing at towed targets from Liberator bombers in simulated combat conditions

A wartime report notes Capt Harold ey of San Marino on the road to recovery after injuries. His wife Marion, and sources from the War Department confirm the injury with limited details but state he is getting along nicely. Iain Grey remains stationed in England.
Six San Marino Brownie troops plan the annual Brownie Revel at Lacy Park on Saturday June 3. Girls meet at 11 30 at the Virginia street entrance with nosebag lunches and 10 cents for drinks and dessert. Entertainments include dances songs and games with mini flower arrangements on display. Mrs John Logan leads planning.
Lt. Louise Borton of San Marino daughter of D G Miller of 1459 Bedford road has joined the Air WAC recruiting team at Long Beach. She enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps in December 1942 attended officers’ candidate school at Ft. Des Moines and served in Fort Devens and Cincinnati before duty as recruiting officer at the Air Transport Command Base St Joseph Missouri. She graduated from South Pasadena San Marino High School and Occidental College and was a legal secretary with the Automobile Club of Southern California before enlistment.
