Christmas Tree and Window Contest in San Marino

The Tribune sponsors a citywide Christmas display contest inviting every San Marino resident to decorate outdoor trees and a business window. A panel led by Tom Hammond, Guy Lauderbaugh, and C E Beardsley will judge trees. voters pick top windows by store votes, with a loving cup awarded to the winning merchant by December 30.

Ingathering to Gladden Needy on Christmas

Annual Christmas ingathering in San Marino runs on December 16 17 and 18 to collect canned goods groceries and clothing for adults and children Each child should receive one gift either a used toy in good condition or a new one Gift packages should be wrapped and labeled with the recipient’s age and sex The effort is led by Mrs Kenneth Verling Welfare Chairman of the Marine Council of Parents and Teachers with assistance from Mel Wayne Allan James Norton Jr and others A call to chairmen will arrange pickup or delivery to schools

Junior Hi P T A Meeting and Christmas Program

The Junior High P T A of South Pasadena San Marino will hold a regular meeting and annual Christmas program on Thursday evening December 19 at 7 45 p m in the school auditorium. The Glee and Dramatic Clubs present the program and donations of food or clothing are requested for 200 to 250 baskets for the needy.

Valentine PTA Meeting Features Christmas Program

The Valentine Parent Teacher Association holds its Christmas meeting Tuesday at 2 PM in Room 1. Speakers include Mrs. Joseph Marshall of Pasadena Council of Religious Education on Christmas traditions in the home. Exhibits from Bullock's Clara Griesbach, Pasadena Toy Factory, and a book display from Vroman's will entertain and aid gift ideas.

San Marino Girl Scouts Name Community Service Chairman

Mrs. James P. Mackel of 2847 Cumberland has been elected Community Service Chairman for the San Marino Girl Scout District. She and Mrs. Harold Haver coordinate services with troop leaders as Girl Scouts expand a national emergency driven program including knitting for the Junior Red Cross and sewing for the Needlework Guild. The San Marino troops plan a Christmas party for Mexican girls from the San Gabriel Welfare Settlement at Huntington School on December 17 and other holiday events.

Mrs Brooks speaks on Flower Arrangement at San Marino club

San Marino Garden Club held its December meeting at 1368 Bedford Road with Mildred Bryant Brooks of South Pasadena presenting Flower Arrangement for Christmas. The program opened with routine business and nature notes from floral explorer Robert W. Campbell followed by tips on color and design in home decor.

The DuPont presented The Big Stick about Theodore Roosevelt in the Cavalcade of America series. Ray Collins played Roosevelt. About 15 percent of 200 surveyed homes listened, with a goal to rise three to four times by December 18 in South Pasadena and San Marino.

Huntington school sewing room hosts San Marino volunteer Red Cross workers each Friday from 9 to 4. They sew layettes shirts and shorts for Great Britain and Greece to ease civilian bombings. Marine women volunteer, large sewing room, tea served, aims to aid suffering in war-torn countries.

Accident at Huntington Drive and Granada Road Involving Rusts Nursery Truck

Friday morning collision at Huntington Drive and Granada Road involved a Rusts Nursery truck driven by Joe Lejoda Gabriel colliding with a car. Mrs Gray, whose car overturned, and the driver were examined by Officer Stewart. no one required hospital treatment and both vehicles were moved under their own power.

Veterans to Be Happy with Holiday Boxes at Sawtelle Barracks

Older Cubs to Become Boy Scouts

Plans are set for a Christmas meeting of San Marino Cub Scout Pack No. 1 at Huntington school gym on Thursday at 7 pm. Ed Ainsworth to Speak at San Marino Rotary Club

Ed Ainsworth, veteran Los Angeles Times columnist, will headline the San Marino Rotary Club luncheon at the Huntington Hotel. His talk titled Behind the News will review his career from 1920 when he started as City Editor of the San Pedro Pilot to his 17 years at the Times.

Carleton B Tibbetts of 1812 West drive was named one of three vice presidents of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce. Tibbetts serves as president of L A Steel Casting Co and sits on the San Marino City Council. James L Beebe and Clark E Bell were named to the chamber board of directors. Joseph A Hartley, president of a wholesale chemical company, is the nominee for president for 1941 and would succeed J L Van Norman after the January 8 election. Hartley was first vice president during Van Norman’s term.

City Council Eyes Water Rate Probe Amid Meeting

In San Marino City Hall Mayor Lacy and four councilmen reviewed 18 bids from 12 firms for three police cars with trade-ins, sending all to Police Chief McClung for review. Protests over Rubio drive sewer assessment were denied, while Monterrey Road bus protests arose as private operators seek Railroad Commission approval. Hotchkis named to study transport licensing. December 23 adjourned session to draft a broad licensing ordinance.

Woman's Club Holiday Meeting December 18 at 2 P M

Santa Claus made his first entrance in San Marino during the San Marino Business Association dinner at Joy's Inn. John Barton Dr J Epperson and Guy Lauderbaugh spoke while Paul Sloggett and daughter Claire and Billie Jenks provided music. Door prizes funded by local merchants were drawn and Marshall Walker arrived as Santa giving gifts to attendees.
