Famous artist to speak on flowers at San Marino club

The San Marino Garden Club will hear Mildred Bryant Brooks of South Pasadena speak on flowers during the December meeting on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at 1368 Bedford Road. Brooks, a noted etcher and flower arranger, has earned 21 awards in eight years and had a solo exhibit at the Smithsonian.

Mariners Receive Awards At Girl Scout Ship Ceremony

A formal ship ceremony by the Flying Cloud Mariner crew marked the Girl Scout Court of Awards at Huntington School gym. Twenty six new scouts were invested and five year stripes awarded to Jane Egge Toby Pierce and Mrs Schieber.

Ivey Jr. Named Assistant Personnel Adjutant at Hamilton Field

Lieutenant Herbert D. Ivey Jr., recently activated for an extended period, has been named assistant personnel adjutant at Hamilton Field California. He will oversee personnel records and occupational classification of new enlistees. He graduated from South Pasadena San Marino High School in 1936 and earned a social science degree at Stanford this year. He is a member of Alpha Delta Phi and is the son of Mr and Mrs H D Ivey of 1590 Shenandoah Road.

Tom Mee Named In Who's Who Of Universities

Tom Mee son of Mr and Mrs George L Mee of 1715 El Molino Ave will receive a B S from the University of Arizona in June and is listed in the 1940 41 Who's Who in American University and Colleges. He belongs to Phi Gamma Delta, majors in Animal Husbandry, leads the ROTC Mounted Troop, and will train in Civil Aeronautics after earning a private pilot license. He served as Junior Class President and is now Senior Class President, graduating high school in 1937.

The fire department cautions homeowners to keep vines away from chimney flues to prevent fire risks. It warns that vines can trap heat and ignite surrounding materials if they touch flues, chimneys, or vents and stresses keeping clearances and removing flammable debris.

Legion To Meet Next Tuesday December 10

The San Marino Post No. 239 American Legion holds its regular monthly dinner meeting at San Gabriel Country Club next Tuesday with dinner at 7 p.m. and an 8 p.m. talk by William G. Campbell USC on The Orient on the Eve of War. Campbell has spoken to the Legion annually and will offer a timely, informed view of Orient conditions.

Cubs Visit Naval Air Base in Long Beach

Cubs from Den 10 enjoyed a birthday dinner at home with Rich Culler leading a book review of Mr Poppers Penguins. Den Dads A T Stellar and William H Culler supervised games. Saturday's trip, guided by W P Weirick and E C Tapfer, toured Long Beach Naval Air Base and included a nerve testing machine for flyers.

Preston Hotchkis will preside at a luncheon in the Ambassador Hotel as part of the fifteenth annual California State Chamber of Commerce meeting. Dr. Benjamin M. Mullendore Advocates Private Enterprise at San Marino Club

Radio Survey To Determine Value Of Fine Program

South Pasadena and San Marino High School P T A begins a telephone survey to measure listener interest in Cavalcade of America. Led by Mrs. William Dresser and Elmer J. Erickson the study runs December 4 to January 29 with follow up surveys on December 18 and January 29 to gauge changes and engagement among adults and children. San Marino reports an eleven month 1940 building total of 2 238 207, up from 1 744 396 in 1939. Alhambra leads nearby cities with 2 874 912 and San Gabriel with 2 379 106. November 1940 San Marino permits total 190 883 vs 136 266 in 1939, signaling strong postwar construction.

Pasadena Realty Board Elects Officers For 1941

F L Montgomery of 1055 Winston named vice president of the Pasadena Realty Board and HOLC property representative. Colin Stewart and Harry P Hammond also chosen as vice president and president. Simpson to Attend S F Convention as AVA Officer

Roy E. Simpson superintendent of South Pasadena schools will attend the December 15 American Vocational Association convention in San Francisco where he was named to the All Western Committee. About 3000 delegates from across the United States will discuss national defense implications and the shift toward mechanical and engineering fields.

New School Bus Expands San Marino Transit Fleet

San Marino residents welcome a new International school bus added to the district fleet. The bus already serves two districts, easing early pickups and late loads, enabling safer home delivery on a standard schedule. The vehicle, driven by S B Davis, was approved at the last Board of Education meeting.
