Fall Tragedy Claims J. H. Simpson In Pasadena

John H. mson died after a fall from a third floor porch at Hopington Hospital. Funeral services for J. H. Simpson will be held at Ives and Warren Memory Chapel in Pasadena. Survived by widow Vesta Simpson, grandson Kenneth, brother Dr Russell Simpson, sister Mrs Grace Kay. He was a longtime Pasadena San Gabriel Valley contractor and bank director.

San Marino Community Chest Exceeds Fundraising Goal

At the annual meeting Roy E. Bolstad announced that the Community Chest goal of 40500 dollars was reached with almost 2000 dollars to spare. The council praised donors and workers for the year’s single drive. Teachers in the San Marino district sent a substantial check marking 100 percent staff participation.

Committee To Study School Curriculum

The school Curriculum Committee appointed by the Board of Education of the Marine Unified School District will meet December 18 at 1:30 PM in the high school at 1665 West Drive. Citizens are invited to attend to discuss elective and art courses.

San Marino School Bonds Sold To Bank For District Expansion

San Marino's Unified School District sold a 1,250,000 bond to Bank of America and Associates with a 2 percent coupon and a 3,479 premium. Net yield about 2.47 percent. Proceeds fund Carver school land purchase on San Gabriel boulevard, Huntington drive, and additions plus Carver building revamp into a new high school. Maurice Jones Jr. attended the sale. The issue covers part of a 3,250,000 authorization with another issue planned for June 1953.

Hemming Buys Topp's Restaurant in Glendale

Gilbert Hemming announces the purchase of Topp's Restaurant at Huntington Drive. He will close for a week to rearrange kitchen equipment and reopen before Christmas under the name Gilbert's. Hemming runs Tam o' Shanter for Van de Kamp's in Glendale and previously managed a van de Kamp unit.

Protest Delays Huntington Drive Crossover At Old Mill

Citizens on Old Mill road object to a planned crossover on Huntington drive saying it would turn the residential street into a speedway. Council postponed the project after complaints from property owners while Chelsea merchants and the EPA redirected plans to a crossover opposite the alley west of Old Mill road to preserve the neighborhood.

Rooney Elected San Marino Community Council President

Laurence P. Rooney of 2385 Melville Drive became president of the San Marino Community Council at the annual City Hall meeting last Monday. He has served as vice president this year and led civic groups including City Club civic affairs. Willard F. Goertz was elected vice president for 1953, with D. H. Fiscus re-elected treasurer and Betty Thomas secretary.

City sets new voting record in county and state race

San Marino voters turnout reaches 8 137 of 8 694 registered. The city posts 93.59 percent participation, one of the county and possibly state highs. Absentee votes total 651, making grand total 8 137. Proceeds from local scout Christmas tree sale aid Explorer Post 5 for the National Scout Jamboree.

Post Office Extends Hours in San Marino

Starting today the San Marino post office will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Superintendent Marshall E. Lundgren announced the 12 hour schedule to aid patrons handling their Christmas mail.

James W. Bradford owner of Old Mill Cleaners at 2659 Mission Street was elected president of the Dry Cleaners Association in Pasadena. Bradford has long been active in the organization and served on multiple committees. The association covers the territory west of metropolitan Los Angeles.

Traditional Christmas Pageant Rehearses For Dec 18 Production

The eighth grade at Huntington School rehearses for The Perfect Gift a Christmas pageant set for December 18 at 7 30 p m in the Huntington School Auditorium. Kenneth White wrote and expanded the production with new tableaux music and speaking parts to engage parents students and guests from nearby schools. A 1 30 p m matinee for the Huntington School PTA precedes public showings and tickets will be distributed by eighth graders.

Several residents on Los Robles avenue have filed letters with the City Council criticizing inadequate fire protection and low water pressure in the business and residential area north of Mission street, disclosed last night.

Parker Lyon praised San Marinans for support as Gift Lift packages for men in Korea were delivered to Pasadena for relay to Los Angeles.
