The San Marino PTA and SMnet publish the school calendar on the city Community Calendar online. Community members can view dates for PTA events and school activities from home, with drafts and ongoing tweaks noted by PTA leaders.
San Marino High School students Naotaka Arima Tessie Shih Paul Hung Steven Wu Adern Yu Monica Yu were among 30 top Southern California students honored in Pomona College Mathematics Talent Search awards. Honors Day at Pomona included lectures a luncheon prize awards and campus tour.
San Marino High School and Carver Elementary face bidding issues as Phase 1 nears completion. Bids for the high school shell rose 86 percent over budget and lath and plaster bids were high while electrical and HVAC bids aligned with expectations. Carver shell bids were high with only one bidder, prompting future re bids and a five week delay. Phase II plans include a new math and science building at the high school with seven classrooms and seven labs, and at Carver a new library and technology center with four classrooms.
San Gabriel County Water District awaits soil test results to secure city excavation permit for a week long pipeline project crossing Huntington Drive from San Marino High School to Bradbury. General Manager Chuck Shaw says crews are ready to lay 24 inch flexible iron pipe once approvals arrive, with work moved to Longden Avenue to minimize downtime as San Marino High opens September 9.
Richard Leach USC tennis coach will speak at next week’s San Marino Rotary meeting about the team. He may bring Andrew Park SMHS senior who led the Titans to a CIF title and will attend USC this fall.
Elena Poon, a 1998 San Marino High School graduate now at UC Berkeley, won a $6,500 annual Lucent Technologies Academic Award for children of employees. Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Perkins Poon, her mother Doris is a supervisor in Lucent Pasadena.
USC geologists drill a 15 foot trench on Sierra Madre Boulevard near Oakwood Drive to carbon date past ground movements on the Raymond fault. Project director James Dolan and USC graduate student Kristin Weaver compare trench findings with Arboretum data to identify rupture history and potential patterns across Southern California faults.
