Anti Petrilo Law Test Due In Chicago Strike At Radio Station
In Chicago on May 29 a strike urged by James C. Petrillo president of the AFL Federation of Musicians may prompt a constitutional test of the Lea law. U S District Attorney J Albert Wall asked WAAF lawyers for a written memorandum on alleged Petrillo violations after he ordered three studio librarians off the job. Petrillo said he expected prosecution and that he acted because the station would not hire three more librarians. The anti Petrillo law provides up to one year in jail and a $1000 fine for unions forcing broadcasters to hire more staff than needed to perform service. A station official said librarians pull records from cabinets into the studio. Petrillo argued the Lea bill safeguards the Constitution. He vowed to resist the law unless the Supreme Court says the Bill of Rights and abolition of slavery do not apply to Hawaii, the station’s backers said. WAAR continued operating with other staff performing the strikers’ duties.
