Progress in municipal advertising program revealed

The municipal advertising commission released a printed report covering activities from January 1948 to the present, noting it is a summary and not a recommendation. Ads appeared in National Geographic Holiday and weekly magazines, with direct mail costs averaging two cents per inquiry. The commission tested new methods, purchased 2,000,000 matchbooks for distribution across several states, and highlighted a record 1918-49 winter tourist season driven by the Romantic San Antonio booklet and related materials. It defended advertising for industry and warned that effective city promotion requires more than ads, involving extensive personal outreach and a strong staff. Civic groups requested about $16,000 in aid from a $160,000 advertising fund, with no tax imposed.
