Mouton Trial Over Slugging Case At Aztec Theater
Roy Mouton of Houston, 33, charged with miscuit to murder, faced jury after both sides rested. Prosecution alleged he slugged Cogdill, union business manager, in a projection booth amid a plan to damage the Aztec Theater. Mouton testified Cogdill offered work and showed a blackjack and mask, claiming he could “make yourself a job” by slugging a night watchman and destroying equipment. Cogdill testified he was struck from behind and hammered about the head and body with a blackjack. The defense said Cogdill pressed Mouton into the scheme. Mouton claimed he acted in self defense during the struggle on April 13. The incident ended with Mouton leaping from a fire escape, injuring himself, as witnesses placed him fleeing the scene. Prosecution and defense witnesses differed on key details, including identification of Mouton and the events in the projection booth. Clifton Mouton and W J Hamilton testified for the defense, stating Roy Mouton knew Cogdill and had been introduced. Cogdill had previously discharged Clifton Mouton and Hamilton, alleging involvement in the affair.
