Reports from Tokyo and Peiping describe a second Japanese reconnaissance flight over the American legation area in Peiping. Japanese forces claim to press toward Peiping and Tientsin and prepare to extend an armed offensive while Chinese anti Aircraft fire repels the aircraft.
At Richmond Texas May 12 a trial heard that B B Ewing a Gregg county convict was beaten and slain in a Harlem prison barracks used for convicts on report day. Four inmates Piet Connally Suliman Henry Griber and W G Gresham faced justice captain Owens testified about the fatal assault October prior.
A Warren Ohio bus crash left multiple injured when a shipment of crates spilled into the roadway and the vehicle veered into a ditch. First responders from Warren and nearby Cleveland area teams attended the scene as investigators examined the wreckage.
New York May 12 A fight to overturn the verdict convicting 16 year old Harry Murch of murdering 12 year old Willie Bender was mapped by defense counsel. Murch faced a second degree murder verdict for luring Willie to a deserted house gagging him and stabbing him during a game pretense. The state contends he killed for revenge. Murch faces 2 years to life.

Altus Oklahoma May 19 Convicts of first degree manslaughter receive 20 year prison terms for the slaying of a bank official. J H Brock and Hendrick Banker planned to seek bond pending appeal as the shooting occurred shortly after Ernest closed the bank. Brock claimed self defense.
Philadelphia police captured James Vandersille a 32 year old truck driver believed to be the writer of extortion letters threatening to blow up trains. The letters demanded 75000 from the Pennsylvania Railroad and prompted a heavy guard around W Higginbotham, general manager of the eastern region.
Providence May 13 Daniel Fo McLaughlin state labor commissioner reported sharp gains in industrial employment in Rhode Island in April. In 216 plants total payrolls were 6.8 percent higher than April 1932 and 5.6 percent larger than March 1939. The rise was summarized by the textile trades bureau.
A man who claimed to be a former US army captain criticized Dr. Aldred Rosenberg in London. Police reported Captain James E Barna confessed to stealing a swastika emblem from a Nazi display. The Swiss government banned Hitlerian uniforms with penalties.
