A mass march to the capitol was expected as the legislature opened to press a $20,000,000 relief bond issue for voters. Thousands gathered, with dire conditions at the relief headquarters where hundreds slept on the ground awaiting food and aid. Authorities warned food distribution could be cut, turning people away if supplies run out.
Relief efforts in McAllen Texas end after exhausting funds with May 11 as the date. A total of 850 unemployed men were assisted by the relief program since it began, as funds ran dry and operations ceased.
Officials from Texas cities urged lawmakers to approve bonds up to 20 million dollars for relief work. If passed, the bond issue would require voter approval at the August 26 election. Relief funds have run nearly dry as the state awaits federal aid and local officials await a response from the R F C. Lawrence Westbrook cited slow federal support while the unemployed march in Austin dwindled to fewer than two dozen. Two representatives were invited to address the session.
