Sheep to the South: Island Ranches and Wool Trade
On Tierra del Fuego Argentina a vast sheep industry dominates the southern archipelago with 800,000 sheep and 11,000 people. Ranches like Estancia Viamonte employ eight shearers to clip six pounds of wool every 20 minutes, yielding about 1,200 sheep daily, as workers migrate from Chile December to February. Sheep are shorn, wool baled, and moved to summer pastures while island ranches function as self-contained communities with limited local supplies and winters spent in Buenos Aires.
