Ickes accuses Hearst of preselecting London and editing platform
Washington June 5 Secretary Ickes charged that William Randolph Hearst was backing and would dictate both the Republican platform and the nominee for 1936. He compared the arrangement to the 1920 Chicago convention, predicting a controlled process with a few men shaping the draft and a foreordained candidate. He cast doubt on the Cleveland convention’s independence and warned of outside influence by the same interests.
