Sioux Elect Adopted Captain Welch as Chief Mato-Watakpa
Pale Face leader John Grass has died at Fort Yates. Captain A G Welch of Mandan, adopted son of Grass, becomes Mato-Watakpa, the Sioux chief. The new chief serves with U S Infantry under Major General Hunter Liggett and remains a liaison with the government on tribal affairs. The Shawnee tradition of adoption elevates Welch, while the tribe awaits his leadership as the pure face chief.
