Reports from shipping circles claim a German U-boat was captured or sunk off the Virginia coast yesterday by a United States destroyer. The patrol ship returned to port today with its crew in high spirits but they would not discuss operations.
From Atlantic port reports it was told how a troop transport sped up the coast with darkened lights and full steam to elude German submarines. Warned by wireless, the crew kept near the coast and raced to this port. Two U-boats gave chase but were outdistanced before American destroyers arrived. One submarine submerged just as the destroyers appeared.
An American steamer loaded with foodstuffs returned to Atlantic port today after reporting it was chased by a German submarine. The captain asked naval authorities to arm the vessel so he could proceed again.
Allied forces continue pressing along the Marne and St Mihiel areas as French and American troops push through Chezy and reach Danmard outskirts. Duna Hoorace Woods of Milwaukee, a flying cadet with Car ruthers Wield, died at Camp Bowie base hospital after crashing from about 2000 feet while flying near the outskirts of the camp. He was brought to the base hospital for treatment. arrangements for funeral are pending.
