Reds Down 3 U.S. Aircraft in Vietnam
North Vietnamese forces shot down a U.S. helicopter in the Central Highlands and a U.S. Phantom was downed over Laos. The helicopter crew lost an observer, the pilot suffered a broken leg, and all four Phantom crewmen were rescued. A U.S. Loach helicopter was also damaged with injuries reported to its crew. Twenty miles north of Pleiku, base strikes followed by B52 raids continued for a fifth straight day as U.S. analysts warned of a possible Communist offensive before Nixon’s China trip.

Demo Charges Pullout Delayed
Washington reports a Democratic spokesman accused President Nixon of delaying the Vietnam troop withdrawal, saying 20,000 American lives have been lost. Sen. Frank Church, on national TV, urged replacement of Nixon, arguing the war is senseless and the pullout could have been completed sooner, not over four years. He warned more pilots will die and more Americans will be harmed if a Democratic president is not elected.
