Mixed reactions to Briscoe crime proposals in Texas
Lawmakers from Bexar County and across Texas offered mixed responses to Governor Briscoe's address on crime and penalties. Some backed reinstating the death penalty for murder of police and firefighters, while others opposed capital punishment or criticized vagueness on marijuana and electronic surveillance. Several representatives supported bilingual education and vocational training, and many urged maintaining local control over schools and expanding offense penalties.
