Texas Feasts on Pork Barrel Projects in Johnson Budget
President Johnson leaves Texas a feast of pork barrel items in the fiscal 1970 budget. Texas ranks fourth in population with enormous power, second only to California, in securing federal projects. The Corps of Engineers program spans 1.3 billion dollars, a slight drop from Johnson’s request, while critics like Senator Proxmire attack specific projects as wasteful boondoggles such as the Oakley Reservoir in Illinois.
