Instructed verdict frees Texas rancher on theft charge
A criminal district court acquitted Alpine rancher Salinas of six head cattle theft after defense attorneys Morriss Sr and Jr argued the indictment was unfair. The jury had earlier heard that at most the case could involve civil dispute if any offense occurred. The defense contended Salinas owed money to Wiser and the sale of cattle at the San Antonio stockyards was under a civil claim.

Breakthroughs Mirror Rommel von Rundstedt in North Africa
A war notebook compares Rommel and Von Rundstedt’s 1942 Tunisian advances. It notes near misses at Thala and Thelepte, Rommel’s aim to seize Allied HQ and Constantinople, and Von Rundstedt’s 60 to 76 mile push toward the Meuse, delaying Allied offensives into 1943. The piece highlights the stubborn defense by American and British forces and the impact of reserves.
