Patterson Defends Canal Oil Project
Secretary of War Robert P. Patterson defended the Canada oil project after a senate war investigating committee criticized Lieut. Gen. Brehon Somervell for the 134 million dollar undertaking. Patterson called Somervell an able officer and said the project changed a weak supply flow into an efficient system for munitions and relief. The committee urged abandoning the project, warning of its high cost and questionable necessity, but Patterson argued the plan was needed to protect Allied oil supply near Alaska against potential Japanese attacks.
