Less Canned Food For Civilians Seen
The 1944 45 civilian supply of canned fruits and vegetables will be cut sharply under new Food Distribution Orders. C W Kitchen deputy director said canners must set aside about 70 percent of 1942 49 average production of canned fruits for the United States and allied forces and other needs. About 40 percent of the average annual canned vegetables from 1942 43 will be needed for military and allied use, with British shares for troops in Italy and other theaters. Civilian supply for 12 listed items would total roughly 17 million cases, far below 1941 42 peak and 1943 44 levels. If 1944 pack exceeds expectations civilian canned food would rise, else cuts could be larger.
