Britain plans 500 mile mine field off coast to deter German mines
Britain announced a coastal mine belt from the Orkneys to Dover to guard shipping from German mines. The 90 to 40 mile wide strip would lie about eight miles offshore behind which ships could move, and would also shield warships from submarine attacks. Officials estimate over 200,000 mines may be required. A current field already spans the German coast from Denmark to the Netherlands, guarding entrances to German bases.
