A major wintry system blanketed the northern half of the nation on Tuesday. Snow and extreme cold moved from Montana and the Dakotas through the Great Lakes to New York and Pennsylvania. The heaviest snow hit a band from southeastern Minnesota to northern Indiana and southern Michigan, with Chicago receiving over seven inches. Temperatures plummeted to 17 below in North Dakota and Minnesota and -11 in South Dakota as cold winds continued eastward.
