Sewer Plant Breakdown Revealed Continues On Page One

The city faces a $3,950,000 sewer system ask with $502,000 paid down and $4,148,000 outstanding. About $240,000 remains cash in the sewer fund as interest ranges from 4 to 5 percent. The 1894 $500,000 issue accrues 5 percent since issuance, with only $60,000 bought back to reduce interest. it matures September 1, 1934. More than $400,000 sits in city deposits earning 3 percent, awaiting the 1894 debt’s maturity. The plant opened in 1930 and currently handles 15 million gallons daily, with digesters and drying beds strained. two new digesters, each $20,000, and additional drying beds are needed. A chlorinator, costing part of the $1,430,000 federal request, would be added as a temporary safeguard. If sewer bonds pass, a monthly user charge may extend to street connections and fixtures beyond four. The city notes the plant is near 100 percent capacity in disposal, with the intake running at 75 percent. Officials say Olmos Park’s connection is needed to protect water supplies, and the bond issue could create up to 800 jobs. The election on January 20 will decide $1,436,000 in bonds. 70 percent would be issued if funded by government grants. the rest may be sold to the government.
