China and Soviet tensions shape editor’s China tour
The editor notes back-to-back visits in Moscow and Peking reveal stark contrasts in attitude toward foreigners, with Chinese officials more open and eager to engage. Meetings with top editors, foreign ministry leaders, and the Sino Soviet boundary negotiators surface fears of Soviet world dominance, ongoing border tensions, and debates within Maoist doctrine about modernization versus perpetual revolution. The tour includes a stay at the US Liaison Office with Ambassador Bruce and Evangeline, a visit to a large collective farm, and sightseeing at the Forbidden City, Great Wall, and Ming Tombs, ending with a cautious view that a week cannot make one an expert on China.
